7 Ways to Wean Yourself Off Your Idiot Box

A few days ago, I blogged about the battle with my idiot box and how hard it was for me to turn off my television because I was so addicted. I think this is a battle a lot of writers and people in general face. I was supposed to follow up with a few ways to win your own battle but some things, personal and work wise, overtook me and I had to put it on hold. Anyway, here is the post now. Enjoy.
  1. The obvious and most simple option is turn it off. Just walk over to it and flip a switch. With modern technology, you don’t even have to walk to it. You can press a button on your remote and kaput, the end. However, this can be quite impossible so on to 2.
  2. Cancel your cable like I did. Walk to the cable company and no matter what they offer you, insist on canceling it.
  3. I know when you’re obsessed with all the shows on TV; it can be hard to turn it off.  Personally, I love Desperate Housewives and 24. You can buy the season DVD when it comes out, watch it in one go on your laptop and you’re done till the next year.
  4. Tune into MTV/VH1 and watch for a few hours. I guarantee looking at female musicians private parts on display or listening to foul lyrics will turn you off television for several days.
  5. Set a timeline for yourself. For instance, 2 hours in the evening, 3 days a week or only on weekends. Slowly lessen that time until you don’t feel like turning it on anymore. Of course, this can only work if you have a will stronger than iron man’s armor.
  6. Think of all the other more useful things you could be doing while wasting time watching something that is of no value to you. Really think about it. Calculate the time spent watching the idiot box weekly, monthly and yearly. The end number isn’t pretty at all.
  7. If after reading all the above, you still find it daunting to turn off your idiot box, then you are left with only one option. The one below. Hopefully, it won’t come to that.

LOL! Great tips. I don't know that I can completely cut tv out of my life but I might use your tips to at least cut back drastically cos I need it.

Hmmm, don't think I have the courage to turn it off. Do you have any suggestions apart from the ones on the list for a incurable couch potato? LOL

@Totin, you've got to start slow and then ease into it especially if you're a chronic addict.
@Anon, the ultimate suggestion is No 7. Take a bat to it. LOL!
