Be Happy

I stumbled across an article announcing the engagement of Prince William to Kate Middleton today. It brought back memories of his mother and her life. We were living in England when she got married in 1981 and there were parties all over London. We had loads to eat and all the kids got a truckload of Charles and Diana goodies. It seemed just like one of those happily ever after Disney tales except it wasn’t. My mummy and I were a tad obsessed with Princess Diana. In subsequent years, we read books about her and had very long conversations about what a [insert unsavoury word here] Prince Charles was. We discussed how terrible it must be to love someone you know, without a shadow of a doubt, is in love with someone else and worse, apparently unable to do anything about it.

When she divorced him in 1996, there were high fives all around. Finally, she would get the chance to find true love. Exactly one year and four days later, Princess Diana met her end in a tunnel in Paris. My mummy and I were gutted when we heard the news. I know she gave birth to two wonderful children and was a great mother but in matters of the heart, life fell short for her.

Her life and early death taught me a very valuable lesson. If you are not happy or satisfied with a situation, do something about it. Don’t moan, don’t complain, don’t live with it – do something about it. Don't conform to society's expectations of you.
In whatever you do or wherever you are, do what makes you happy because life is just too damn short.

R.I.P Princess Di.
